Treatment For Panic Attacks
There are as many possible treatments for panic attacks as there are possible causes for them. If you are suffering from panic attacks, do not think that it is just something that you have to learn to live with. While for some the attacks are mild, for others they are severe and frequent enough so as to impede their quality of life.
Even if your panic attacks are not severe, there is no reason to allow them to continue when there are several possible treatment options available.
Prevention
Many people feel that prevention is the best medicine when it comes to treatment for panic attacks. Some people are “lucky” enough to have been able to pinpoint exactly what triggers a panic attack. For those people, prevention is as simple as avoiding the stimulus that causes their attacks.
Others are able to prevent any attacks by taking medication that has been prescribed by a doctor. This is most often in the form on an antidepressant.
Certain types of therapy, such as behavioral therapy, has been shown to be effective in preventing panic attacks in some people.
Because panic attacks are usually brought on by anxiety, anything that can help and relieve anxiety is thought to be a possibly effective way to prevent panic attacks. These include yoga, exercise and meditation.

During an Attack
Some people seek treatment for panic attacks that are occurring in the moment. For severe and fairly long lasting panic attacks, a doctor may prescribe Xanax or a similar prescription drug.
It is important to note that while these medications can bring quick relief from the symptoms of a panic attack, they are not intended for long term treatment. Some patients feel so secure in knowing that they have the option of taking the drug if needed, that it reduces their anxiety and they actually experience fewer panic attacks.
Of course, that is not the case for everyone. While the drugs may be used initially, it will almost always be with the plan to phase them out over time as the treatment continues.
As with many medical conditions, what works great for one person might not be at all effective for another. In many cases, finding an effective treatment for panic attacks will come down to a series of trial and error.
If you can work to prevent a panic attack, that is ideal. For most, it will not happen right away. Instead, they will experience a slow decline in the number and severity of panic attacks until, hopefully, they stop happening altogether.
Unfortunately, some panic attack sufferers become stressed when the first attempt at treatment does not work. Some start to feel hopeless and, in some cases, this can trigger more panic attacks. If you are starting treatment, you should work to prevent this kind of anxiety.
Remember, not every treatment will work for every person. If the first treatment for panic attacks does not work, that just means that you are a little bit closer to finding the treatment that is right for you.
Know that you WILL find the right treatment if you stick with it and have some patience. Some people suffer for years with panic attacks when the answer was right around the corner.
Don’t give up. If self treatment does not bring results, then continue working with your doctor or therapist until your best treatment for panic attacks is discovered.
