Tips For Overcoming Panic Attacks

For some people, overcoming panic attacks requires professional intervention. Others have been able to learn to overcome panic attacks on their own. Doing so requires discipline and self control and is often a matter of trial and error as the person seeks to discover what works best for them.

Below are some things to keep in mind when working on overcoming a panic attack on your own.

Speak to Yourself

When you feel an attack coming on, begin to speak to yourself or, more specifically, to the feelings or fear. “I am not going to die.” “There is nothing to be afraid of.” “There is no real danger here.” Those are three examples of what one might say to themselves as they tried to overcome a panic attack.

Remember that a panic attack is a feeling or terror or dread in a situation where no real danger exists. If you can make your body understand that there is no danger, that could be the key to overcoming panic attack.

Control Your Breathing

During most panic attacks, the breathing becomes much more rapid than normal. Often, if you can bring your breathing back to normal, you will at least be able to shorten the length of the attack. Concentrate on taking deep slow breaths in and out.

Feel What You Feel

One mistake that some make when working on overcoming panic attacks is that they try very hard to suppress what they are feeling. Instead, the answer could be to simply allow the feelings to come without fighting them. When you try to stop them, you are adding further stress to the situation. Instead, let the feelings flow, but keep reminding yourself that there is no real danger and the fear that you are feeling will soon pass.

Do Not Wallow in the Aftermath

As soon as the panic attack is over, immediately just move on with the rest of your day. Do not talk about it or otherwise dwell on it. Remember, these panic attacks are already interfering in your life. They are using up precious moments of your life. Do not allow them to have one more second than they are already taking.

Just a Test

As you are experiencing a panic attack, tell yourself that this is a test that is allowing you to learn to perfect your methods of overcoming panic attack. Try very hard to be methodical in your thinking such as “When I look at the sky, I feel calmer. I must remember to look at the sky during my next panic attack.”

When you focus on the logical rather than on the emotional, it may make overcoming panic attacks that much easier.
One or more of these methods may hold the key to helping you better deal with your panic attacks. Again, not everyone is going to have the same measure of success with the same methods. Still, each is worth a try.

Understand that not everyone can control their panic attacks on their own. If you cannot, it doesn’t mean that you are weak or crazy. Everyone is different and, for some, the cause of the panic attack is organic and may require medication in order to control.

Try overcoming panic attacks on your own, but if it doesn’t work, do not feel like you must go on living in the shadow of the next attack.
